VTOL Fixed-wing UAV

Overview

  • Drones have been widely used in many applications like surveillance, inspection, military, and agriculture.
  • Conventional multirotor drones have less endurance and payload capacity so they cannot be used for last-mile delivery or surveillance missions.
  • Hybrid fixed-wing VTOL combines the capability of both multirotors and conventional fixed wings.

Aim

To design and control custom-fabricated Fixed-wing UAV with Vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL)  capabilities for payload delivery and surveillance purposes.

Prototype 1

  • Quadplane configuration is selected with 4 motors used for vertical takeoff and landing and one motor is used for forward propulsion.
  • Quad motors are positioned in an X layout.
Maximum Takeoff weight6 kg
Payload Capacity0.5 kg
Calculated endurance30 mins
Cruise velocity15 m/s
Range18-20 km

Test Flight

To test the vertical takeoff and landing, a test flight was conducted.
